As leaders, we're often focused on our teams, our organizations, and the goals we're responsible for achieving.

Yet, many high-performing leaders spend so much time driving results and managing the business that they rarely stop to evaluate whether their own careers are moving in the direction they want.

This month's article is a timely reminder to do exactly that.

I hope it gives you something meaningful to think about as we begin the second half of the year.

 

 

Mid-Year Career Reflection: Are You Where You Want To Be? 

Tomorrow, July 1st, marks an important milestone for me: 11 years since launching Your Call To Action, LLC. 

As I reflected on this anniversary, it struck me that we are also halfway through the year. Just as successful organizations benefit from taking stock of where they've been and where they're headed, so do our careers.

So here's a simple question:

Are you where you want to be in your career?

Not where you hoped to be in January.  Not where you think you should be. But where you truly want to be.

Take a moment to ask yourself the following questions:

✨ Am I energized by the work I'm doing?

✨ Am I continuing to learn and grow?

✨ Do I feel valued and appropriately compensated?

✨ Am I moving toward the career and life I want, or simply maintaining the status quo?

✨ If nothing changed over the next 12 months, would I be happy?

I know. Some of those questions are about as comfortable as an unexpected performance review.😏

But clarity often starts with being honest with yourself.

One thing I learned after helping more than 1100 mid- to senior-level corporate leaders successfully navigate career transitions is that many fall into what I call the mid-year trap.

They become so focused on delivering results, leading teams, and solving business challenges that they stop actively managing their own careers.

Months pass. 

Sometimes years. 

Then one day they realize they've plateaued. Advancement opportunities have become limited. Their voice is no longer being heard in the way it once was.  They find themselves questioning whether the organization, culture or leadership team is the right fit.

The good news?

You don't have to make a dramatic change to create momentum.

Sometimes the most important step is simply getting clear on where you are today and where you want to go next.

Six months from now, you'll be starting the new year. 

The question to ask yourself is:  Will I be in the same place, or closer to where I want to be in my career?

If you've had that persistent feeling that it's time for something new, trust it.

In my experience, those feelings rarely appear overnight. They tend to build over time. 

Many of my clients come to me because they've outgrown their current role. They're no longer challenged, advancement opportunities have slowed down and they feel held back in their career, or the environment simply isn't the right fit anymore. 

While they're still employed and focused on delivering results in their current role, we work together confidentially to clarify what's next, strengthen their positioning, and strategically pursue and land their next right-fit opportunity.

Whatever is driving that feeling, the second half of the year is an ideal time to get intentional about what's next ... rather than hoping things will improve on their own.
