Hi Audie!

Happy July 4th! πŸŽ†πŸŽ‡ If you're celebrating Independence Day, I hope you have an enjoyable and safe day.

This past Saturday, I celebrated the 8th anniversary of launching my coaching and consulting business! πŸ₯‚ I'm so grateful for the countless corporate leaders/executives who have entrusted me to coach, guide and support them throughout their job search/career transition journey.

Helping driven and open-minded corporate professionals gain clarity into "what's next" in their career, up-leveling their messaging and interviewing skills and empowering them with effective job search strategies that will shorten their time to land their ideal opportunity is extremely rewarding to me. If you're considering working with a coach/mentor and are ready to take (imperfect) action, let's talk!

This month's newsletter addresses an often overlooked, yet critical, aspect of conducting a successful job search: becoming aware of and overcoming limiting and outdated beliefs.

From Obstacles to Opportunities: Overcoming Limiting Beliefs in Executive Job Search

Being in job transition can be a challenging and uncertain time for many leaders/executives. Similarly, if you're employed and contemplating making a job/career change, the thought of taking the next step can bring up a wide range of emotions (and fears).

Navigating this journey not only requires practical skills and effective strategies but also a strong mindset.

One often overlooked aspect of the job search process is becoming aware of and addressing outdated and limiting beliefs.

We all have them, but most people operate on autopilot and don't realize they have these blind spots until an experienced executive job search coach brings them to your attention and provides a shift in perspective and valuable guidance!

Deeply ingrained thoughts can hinder one's confidence, decision-making and overall success in their job search.

What are Outdated and Limiting Beliefs?

Outdated beliefs are assumptions or perspectives that no longer hold true in the current landscape.

Examples include the belief that job security is guaranteed or that your boss/manager holds the keys to you advancing in your company, or your career success is determined by your tenure at or level within a company.

Limiting beliefs are self-imposed mental barriers that restrict leaders'/executives' potential and keep them playing small and safe.

Examples include thinking you are too old or too late in your career to start over at another company, or thinking companies won't hire you because of your high income level or assumption you will retire in a few years.

Other examples are thinking you don't have the right qualifications or industry experience, or you follow generally-accepted protocols for finding a new job -- applying to online job postings -- because that's what everyone else is doing or what you did years ago to land your current/most recent job.

πŸ’₯Spoiler alert: If you're seeking a corporate role at the Director or VP level and above and are spending more than 10-15% of your time applying to jobs on online job boards, you are wasting your time and energy. Not to mention causing you unnecessary stress, frustration or feeling defeated.

When you're seeking a position at a Director or VP level and higher, there are more effective (and enjoyable) strategies that will yield a greater number of meaningful conversations and interviews
...and give you a competitive advantage.

What's the Impact On Me and My Search?

The impact can be far-reaching, from eroding your self-confidence and self-worth, which makes it difficult to present oneself effectively in interviewing and networking conversations, to dampening your enthusiasm and ability to engage and interact with others.

Even before launching a job search campaign, outdated and limiting beliefs can negatively impact your health and/or personal relationships - staying safe in your current role even though you are bored stiff, are frustrated being passed over for promotions, or are working in a toxic environment.

These beliefs can lead to cautious decision-making and an aversion to taking calculated risks, thus preventing you from pursuing new and potentially more rewarding avenues.

How Do You Overcome Outdated and Limiting Beliefs?

First become aware of them - Reflect on past experiences and/or identify recurring negative thoughts you're having is a crucial first step.

Challenge and reframe them - Is this fear trying to keep you safe? Do you have hard evidence to support this? What if what you've been telling yourself is simply not true? What's a healthier way to look at this that will expand your way of thinking (vs shrinking it)?

Seek support from mentors and job search coaches who are experienced in coaching mid- to senior-level corporate leaders and executives - There's an art and science to preparing for and executing a successful job search campaign that will enable you to secure solid offer(s) at companies that are a great fit for you. The approaches, strategies and skills required to secure mid- to senior level corporate opportunities are significantly different than those used by other job-seekers.

"It's crucial that HOW you show up and conduct yourself throughout your search reflects the actions, leadership and communication skills, and executive presence as the role you are seeking."
~ Audie Fridstein

Strategies for Successful Job Search/Career Transition

Successfully navigating a job or career transition as a mid- to senior-level corporate leader/executive requires a proactive and strategic approach.

It all starts with developing a growth mindset, embracing change and looking at your situation as a gift, and viewing challenges as opportunities for personal and professional growth.

In addition, instead of dwelling on setbacks, adopt a forward-thinking perspective, staying laser focused on your goal using proactive and productive strategies to get you where you want to go. Debrief often -- continue doing what's working well and tweak what's not.

In summary, it's important that you recognize and address outdated and limiting beliefs so you can maximize your job search efforts and land your 'ideal' role. By reframing negative thoughts, seeking professional support and adopting proactive strategies, you can regain confidence, make informed decisions and present yourself effectively during your job search journey.

"You can't escape from a prison until you recognize you are in one. People who have chosen to live within the limits of their old beliefs continue to have the same experiences. It takes effort and commitment to break old patterns." ~ Bob Proctor
