"Always remember... You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think." ~ A.A. Milne

Hi Audie!

We all know that change is inevitable in the corporate world—whether it's driven by restructurings, layoffs, or simply a desire for something new. But how you navigate those changes, especially when it's time to leave a company, can make all the difference in your career trajectory and personal well-being.

The good news? You have the power to shape that exit with grace, dignity, and confidence. Leaving a company doesn’t have to be a moment of defeat or uncertainty—it can be an empowering step toward new opportunities.💪

By preparing ahead of time and negotiating the best exit package, you not only protect your financial future but also strengthen your professional reputation and open the door to exciting new possibilities.

In the following article, we’ll show you how to leave on your own terms, ensuring that the end of one chapter leads seamlessly into the next, brighter one.🌞

Enjoy!

How to Exit with Dignity and Secure The Best Exit Package

Let's face it ~ layoffs, restructurings or even feeling like you're stuck in a dead-end role can happen to anyone, no matter how experienced or accomplished. When the time comes, you want to walk away with your reputation intact, your relationships strong, and, especially, a solid exit package.

Why Exiting Gracefully Matters

Leaving a company isn't just about saying goodbye - it's about preserving how others see you and protecting future opportunities. Your professional reputation is one the line, especially if you're in a leadership role. Colleagues and future employers will remember how you handled your departure. Exiting gracefully demonstrates professionalism and maturity.

Maintaining relationships is equally important. The connections you've built over the years are invaluable, and leaving on good terms can ensure those relationships stay intact.

In addition, managing your mental health during this transition is critical; it can be an emotional time, yet staying focused on your next steps will keep you resilient.

As a career transition strategist, I've seen firsthand how clients who seek support during and after their exit gain clarity and confidence, helping them move forward quickly and with purpose.

Getting Ahead of the Game by Preparing for an Exit

One of the best ways to ensure a smooth exit is to plan ahead. Don't want to wait until the last minute -- start thinking about your options as soon as you notice warning signs, like restructurings or stagnant growth. Many executives are blindsided by layoffs because they believed their position was secure. Be prepared for anything!

Keep a record of your accomplishments. This documentation will not only serve as a reference for performance reviews, but will also give you leverage during exit negotiations.

Understanding your company's policies on severance, benefits and retirement plans is another crucial step in preparing you for the negotiation process.

And don't underestimate the value of a strong support system -- trusted mentors, legal advisors, and executive career transition coaches can provide vital guidance during this time.

Negotiating the Best Exit Package

When it's time to negotiate, it's all about knowing your worth and making sure the package reflects that. Here are some key areas to focus on:

  • Severance Pay - This is the main piece of any exit package. Your severance should reflect your contributions and the time it might take you to land your next role. Don't be afraid to ask for more if what you are offered seems low.
  • Health Benefits - Losing your healthcare can be a huge financial strain, so be sure to negotiate for extended benefits or COBRA coverage.
  • Stock Options/Equity - If you have stock options or deferred compensation, make sure you're receiving what you're entitled to. If applicable, you may even be able to negotiate faster vesting.
  • Non-Competes and NDAs - Be sure to carefully review any restrictions on your future employment. If the terms are unfavorable, push back.

Leaving With Integrity

How you leave a company is just as important as the exit package you secure. Be transparent with your team, communicate clearly, and remain positive without oversharing. Always leave the door open -- you might find yourself consulting or even returning to the company in the future.

No matter the circumstances, avoid burning bridges. Handle frustrations professionally, as your reputation is on the line.

Looking forward -- Believe in Your Future

An exit is a chance to reset and explore new career opportunities. Rebrand yourself by framing your departure as a growth opportunity. Networking is vital during this time, so use your transition to reconnect with your network and explore new paths, whether that means a pivot into a new industry, a higher-level role or even starting your own business.

While many companies offer outplacement services, not all provide personalized, high-level support for mid- to senior-level executives. If necessary, ask for the financial equivalent of these services so you can hire an experienced executive career transition coach who can guide you through this transition to securing "what's next". (hi there!)

Exiting with dignity and securing the best exit package is within your reach -- with the right strategy, support and mindset.
